Antennae

A pandemic-induced trip down memory lane, featuring puppets and a treatise on The Sopranos, is put into hyperspeed when a gender non-conforming praying mantis named E appears in Kelsey’s study. This leads her down a path of discovery of the patterns that shaped who she thinks she is. Actor, impersonator, and song-and-dance man Frank Moran celebrates the characters of the Marx brothers as he dexterously weaves their lives into his own. Language Games

Absurdist take on philosophy and language. A present-day student and activist, Sheela joins Ludwig Wittgenstein, Paul Shepard and Walter Benjamin for a spirited game of mahjong. As they play, her energy conjures Joseph Beuys as a mythological hare. Invisible to the players, he interjects cultural incantations, while the players contemplate how language evolved from naming animals to representing them with signs, and how myths serve the human need to imagine. Physical chair-play creates an escalating rhythm as tensions build… As the chair-e-ography builds to a crescendo, Sheela pushes back against male aggression and wins the game.www.peculiarworks.org/languagegameswww.facebook.com/peculiarworks Watch Trailer

An intimate story in search of the tomb of ancient Egypt's most beautiful woman told through an inventive meld of history, performance and song. Magallanes.0

From 1519 to 1522 Fernando de Magallanes set off to circumnavigate the globe. Magallanes succumbed to a poisoned arrow, but his expedition was successful. This historical science-fiction play explores the first round-the-world voyage and Ferdinand Magallan’s relationship with church, state, his co-explorer Juan Sebastián Elcano, and indigenous people from five continents. During a 500-year confinement, Magellan strikes up dialogues with Shakespeare, stars and stones in his efforts to stay sane. Migrant Shakespeare

Think you know your Shakespeare? Think again! This is Shakespeare as you’ve never seen him before – ‘trippingly on the tongue’… Migrant actors take on the Bard, reinterpreting his words in alien environments you will never have imagined before. They give his iconic characters a new life, migrating them into the roles assigned to outsiders by society. Hamlet is a meat-packer, King Lear a construction worker, Caliban a hotel cleaner, Lady Macbeth a housewife looking after children, and Shylock washes the dishes in a restaurant. This is no one Bard: Shakespeare belongs both to no-one and to everyone.www.seyyar.companywww.facebook.com/seyyarcompanywww.instagram.com/seyyarcompanywww.youtube.com/channel/UClJlJDJKbTGUEb2hxv1pf-Awww.tiktok.com/@seyyarcompanyopen.spotify.com/user/3b0cyl3st83fthn2aubq6awklsoundcloud.com/seyyar-company Watch Trailer

NOunderstanding

Performance is a metaphor and allegory of the world we live in, of interconnections, of incommunicability. We live in the era of global communication, but it has never been so difficult to be understood. We do not listen with the intention of understanding, but with the intention of answering. In empathic listening, the situation is reversed: ears are used, but also eyes and heart. What if we look for the silence within us: silence that allows us to perceive without distortions, and to truly understand the heart with our ears and eyes?www.saramarinelli.comwww.facebook.com/compagnia.freefallwww.instagram.com/freefall_dance_company Watch Trailer #1Watch Trailer #2

Paul Robeson’s Love Song – an audio play

Clearing out their late mother’s belongings, two siblings in Kenosha discover a package containing a record, suggesting a possible hidden romantic link between their grandmother and African-American singer and activist Paul Robeson, dating back to 1949. Watching coverage of protests at the latest police shooting happening in their city, they recall her story of racist, anti-Semitic and anti-Communist protests at a Robeson concert outside Peekskill, NY. The tense and uncertain run-up to the November 2020 elections reveals the best and the worst of their country in violent conflict, in a repeat of that hot summer of 1949.www.tayoalukoandfriends.comwww.robesonslovesong.comwww.facebook.com/TayoAlukoandFriendswww.instagram.com/tayoalukoinliverpool/ Watch Trailer

Shame. That uncomfortable, ugly thing that we all carry around, but rarely look closely at. So what happens if we stage it, and by doing so, reclaim it and take away its power? Six women from across the UK – and 10 hours of virtual rehearsal – bring you this experiment in building shame-resilience through devised, digital performance art. The cast confronts the unspoken and the uncomfortable with care, humour and creativity in this original new piece.www.sheadonovan.org/indigo-arts-collectivewww.facebook.com/theindigoartscollectivewww.instagram.com/indigoartscollective Watch Trailer

Satan vs God

Lucifer, the fallen angel, begs God’s permission to return to Heaven: ‘You forgave everyone, but me. Why not me? I was first.’ Are Satan and God within the eyes and deeds of humankind? Is Satan responsible for all he is accused of? Have we ever heard him testify? Labelled ‘Father of Lies’ and “Prince of Darkness’, Satan puts forward his case: ‘Who says your way is right? They have forgotten you.’ This original piece explores and opens a conversation about religion, faith and humanity that is normally taboo or censored. A solo tour-de-force with music and movement. Winner of the Derek Award for Spirit of the Fringe, Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2021. ‘Original… fresh’ (LouReviews.blog). ‘Mesmerising, seductive and powerful… hauntingly beautiful… I’m blown away by the quality of the writing… Deaon is an electric performer… His words get under your skin and stay there’ (NicsReviews2021.wordpress.com/brighton-fringe-2022)www.deaongriffinpressley.comwww.facebook.com/satanvsgod.officialwww.instagram.com/satanvsgodplay Watch Trailer #1Watch Trailer #2Watch Trailer #3

Shattered

In third grade, Diana kicked her crush in the crotch and her love life didn’t improve from there. What starts as an innocent look into her relationship past, turns into a comedic and heartbreakingly raw exploration of dating, dysfunction, and sexual devastation - told through the voices of 35 characters. Using comedy to take us through tragedy, Shattered ultimately tells the tale of one individual picking up the broken pieces of herself and learning to live again. ‘A woman of 1,000 faces’ (SplashMags.com). ‘Truly epic’ (NoHoArtsDistrict.com). ‘A real tour-de-force’ **** (BouquetsBrickbatsReviews.com). ‘A raw, visceral dissection of the human psyche’ ***** (BroadwayBaby.com). Solos in Spaces

Three solo dance works based on Gibson’s affordance theory performed in three spaces by international Japanese choreographer Akiko Ono. A white classroom is the setting for Gestures; a black room sets the scene for Meditation; in a space among delicate floating sculptures created by Tomoyo Hirairwa, she explores The Bottom of the Sea. Each space evokes a different physical and emotional response in the dancer as she uses her body and original ideas to perform three contrasting solos devised in collaboration with award-winning Canadian choreographer, Takako Segawa. This thought-provoking triple-bill questions the effect of the environment on our well-being.www.akikodanceproject.comwww.facebook.com/taichidancewww.instagram.com/akikodanceproject/ Watch Trailer

Darkly-comedic Korean social satire with innovative staging and colourful physicality. Exhausted by his job and his noisy neighbour keeping him up at night, the man in apartment 709 picks up a parcel for 109 by mistake. Still Life

A site-specific theatrical performance combining movement and text, featuring two women and two couches in two different cities. One in Berlin, the other in Montréal: two performers united through the magic of video to create clumsy and crazy choreography. In a seemingly banal space, a surreal universe appears to offer a comical and absurd look at the world around us. Claude Breton-Potvin and Chantal Dupuis are French-Canadian actresses. Together, they explore how the simple and the mundane can turn into joy and transcendence. Tal

This original solo performance follows the story of a girl-woman-dancer’s experiences with the eating disorder bulimia, and the way she healed through learning psychology and expressive arts. Referring to the theories she learned during her therapy studies, and with honest artistic physical expression, Tal goes back in time and re-tells the memories and events of her life, the pain and suffering she experienced, what people around her said, and the things society tells us. This inspiring piece exposes the mind and encourages us to explore our responsibilities as human beings. ‘A thoughtful and important piece of art’ (AYoungerTheatre.com). Tania Lacy: Catch a Falling Star

In the early 90s, Australian comedian Tania Lacy was so famous she couldn't walk down the street without being mobbed. Dubbed the 'enfant terrible' of Aussie TV, she soon became 'enfant unemployable' for being too mouthy. Fortunately for Tania, women are quite 'in' right now, so there's a good chance she'll get away with it this time. She might have been too naughty for the nineties but that was then, this is now and she's decided she can be 'enfant' anything she wants!tanialacy.comwww.facebook.com/tania.lacywww.instagram.com/tanialacy/ Watch Trailer

How will language change as we confront each other as anonymous bodies with no physical connection? Topography of Breath 2.0

A direct encounter with skin, flesh and breath. In current neo-liberal work conditions, where economic performance drives national identity, the body becomes a form of human capital to be disciplined for constant growth. By working with the raw processes of breath, its muscularity and affects, Pat Toh considers how a body struggles to endure a pandemic, as she examines the lived experience of being productive at such a time. In response to restrictions on in-person gatherings, this innovative digital work is a reflection on present times, and our relationship to breath and breathlessness.www.pattoh.comwww.instagram.com/pattohling Watch Trailer #1Watch Trailer #2

Before going further, she must uncover a truth she might not be willing to face – at least, not on her own… This piece leans into the voyeuristic nature of Zoom performances, explores the binaries we occupy, and asks how we can leap past old behaviours into the possibilities of the unknown.www.unmutedparticipants.comwww.facebook.com/unmutedparticipantswww.instagram.com/unmutedparticipants/www.vimeo.com/showcase/c-arts-unmuted-participantswww.instagram.com/kelseysiepser/ Watch TrailerWatch Trailer | Unmuted Participants Solo Flight season

Being Frank

Actor, impersonator, and song-and-dance man Frank Moran celebrates the characters of the Marx brothers as he dexterously weaves their lives into his own. A real ‘New York story,’ Moran spins a rollicking tale of his younger self and all his heroes, including his working-class family, the Broadway greats, and – of course – Groucho Marx. Riddled with stories both comic and tragic, Moran dances, literally, between the comic and the tragic, as he discovers how powerful wearing all these different masks has really become.www.unmutedparticipants.comwww.facebook.com/unmutedparticipantswww.instagram.com/unmutedparticipants/www.vimeo.com/showcase/c-arts-unmuted-participantswww.facebook.com/frankmoran11www.instagram.com/realfrankmoran/www.youtube.com/channel/UCQh8DpbQxDBxDU9URn9I8Tw Watch TrailerWatch Trailer | Unmuted Participants Solo Flight season

Elaine Liner’s unapologetically satirical play takes liberties for laughs, with the biographies of famous political rivals Donald Trump and Hilary Clinton. What if they’d known each other since the age of eight, assigned to be pen-pals as second-graders? It breathes life into tortured bodies consumed by fire centuries ago, returning colour to long-dead ashen cheeks… It gives voice to their truths, long ago ignored and demolished by a rigid, patriarchal society. I'm Just Saying

Cecelia’s comedic foray into therapy invites you to consider that your way may not be the best way. Revelations abound, like: we all grew up with different rule books and communicating with other humans is like playing a game of telephone. ‘Trust no-one’ is easier said than done, and being in charge is not all it’s cracked up to be. Cecelia learns that being a mother has changed her understanding of everything she believes, loves and trusts, and that she must grow an ultra-thick skin to survive.www.unmutedparticipants.comwww.facebook.com/unmutedparticipantswww.instagram.com/unmutedparticipants/www.vimeo.com/showcase/c-arts-unmuted-participants Watch TrailerWatch Trailer | Unmuted Participants Solo Flight season

Experience the spirit of Wuxia: not a fairytale for grownups, but a medium to evoke thinking between the personal and the social.

Solos in Spaces

Three solo dance works based on Gibson’s affordance theory performed in three spaces by international Japanese choreographer Akiko Ono. A white classroom is the setting for Gestures; a black room sets the scene for Meditation; in a space among delicate floating sculptures created by Tomoyo Hirairwa, she explores The Bottom of the Sea. Each space evokes a different physical and emotional response in the dancer as she uses her body and original ideas to perform three contrasting solos devised in collaboration with award-winning Canadian choreographer, Takako Segawa.
