The Mariana Trench
Theatre Ronin (Hong Kong)
Click. The story starts with a young photographer. A chance encounter
reunites him with a girl he admired at school. He tries to recapture
lost years through this reconnection. Click. His Ma-jie (maidservant
uniquely typical to past Hong Kong) admires the man downstairs who
writes letters for her and others. Click. These parallel disconnected
narratives, divided by a trench of loneliness, reveal the underwater
emotional currents that can drown mankind. Amid fast-paced modernised
Hong Kong, Theatre Ronin’s piece, like the camera, nostalgically shows
the impossibility of hanging on to the past. Performed in Cantonese,
English surtitles.
