Bata Dance
The Bata dance is a traditional Yoruba expressive performance from southwestern Nigeria and the Benin Republic, dating back to the fourteenth century. Originally a energetic dance for Sango, the deity of thunder, it features dramatic, athletic movements including shoulder rolls, spins, and intense footwork. In the 19th century, Bata traditions travelled to Cuba, where they transformed within diasporic communities and became embedded in Santería practices. Sacred ritual and artistic entertainment blend in expressive dance to complex drum rhythms in this energetic celebration to honour cultural heritage. Bata is a unique fusion of tradition and modernity in dance artistry.
