Zhurmbek Zhuke

Central Asia Creative Hub with Qazaq Seasons and Qazaq Creative

A recorded documentary solo performance written and performed by Inzhu Abeu (Sydykova). After discovering a memoir written by her scientist grandfather for his children, Inzhu begins to uncover a life she had barely known about: his childhood, time in an orphanage, scientific career and the family he created. Drawing on his memoir, diaries and writings, her performance becomes an intimate journey through family memory and across generations. Zhurmbek devoted his life to science, becoming one of the founders of hydrogeology in Soviet Kazakhstan. Through his own words, his granddaughter meets Zhuke anew – a humble and warm-hearted man with an incredible desire to live.

    Kulager

    Experience a powerful recorded performance of Kazakh soundrama blending music, movement, choreography and choral voice. Based on Ilyas Zhansugurov’s celebrated poem, the production follows poet and singer Aqan Seri as he mourns Kulager, his beloved racehorse, killed during a race. Director Farkhat Moldaga transforms this story of loss into a meditation on freedom, creativity and those silenced by repression. Featuring music by Steppe Sons, the production brings a classic of Kazakh literature into a bold contemporary theatrical language.     The Tin Drum

    A digital screening of Kazakhstan’s ARTиШОК Theatre’s reimagining of Günter Grass’s landmark novel. Oskar Matzerath grows up amid the rise of National Socialism in the City of Danzig, observing the world around him with a merciless, sarcastic and perceptive gaze. His constant companion is a tin drum, through which he expresses his response to a society becoming increasingly indifferent to growing evil.
