A Perfect Day

Set to excerpts of Glenn Gould’s rendition of Bach’s Two and Three Part Inventions, and accompanied by a luminous sound design by John Gzowski, A Perfect Day speaks to Laurence Lemieux’s relationship to dance over time, and her sense of self within it. Through a series of intimate solos, the work follows the performer as she recollects her past and grapples with the current urgency of the moment to share human emotion with an audience. Serves as a reflection on the importance of artistic practice as a daily occurrence, and the renewal of its purpose post-pandemic.‘Everything about Lemieux’s creative decisions feels organic… The style and control of a true professional’ (EdFringeReview.com)Choreographed and Performed by | Laurence LemieuxSound Design and Variations on Bach | John GzowskiWith excerpts of Bach’s Two and Three Part Inventions, performed by Glenn GouldLighting and Scenic Design | Simon RossiterCostume Design | Jim Searle and Chris Tyrell for Hoax CoutureRehearsal Direction | Danielle BaskervilleAvailable in our digital on-demand programme and was performed live in our Edinburgh Fringe 2022 season.www.citadelcie.comwww.facebook.com/citadelciewww.instagram.com/citadelcie_/ Watch TrailerWatch Preview

Finding Magic

Do you believe in magic? Bev does, but after the death of her son Jess she thought she’d never find her magic again. This remarkably uplifting true story of personal survival and triumph shows how she survived her grief and found new hope. Beverley uses storytelling, film, clowning and magic to introduce and demonstrate her new reality of unpredictable triggers, clichés and flashbacks. The audience are invited to share the new-found surreal humour she deploys to find peace after bereavement. Migrant Shakespeare

Think you know your Shakespeare? Think again! This is Shakespeare as you’ve never seen him before – ‘trippingly on the tongue’… Migrant actors take on the Bard, reinterpreting his words in alien environments you will never have imagined before. They give his iconic characters a new life, migrating them into the roles assigned to outsiders by society. Hamlet is a meat-packer, King Lear a construction worker, Caliban a hotel cleaner, Lady Macbeth a housewife looking after children, and Shylock washes the dishes in a restaurant. This is no one Bard: Shakespeare belongs both to no-one and to everyone.’Migrant Shakespeare and Seyyar Theatre are a gift… Even hindered by an English that I’m sure they struggle for, their Shakespeare is pretty damn good’ (British Theatre Guide)‘A fascinating look at how those whose first language is other than English treat the words and meaning of the Bard’ (LouReviews.blog)‘Highly dramatic… These people grasp the undercurrents so well… It made me think’ (FringeReview.co.uk)Monologues by | William Shakespeare

Odyssea

This dance-on-film follows the epic journey of Odyssea, a curious sea traveller, as she encounters flora and fauna in fantastical realms. New York-based Quicksilver Dance perform with only their hands, painted to become vibrant characters. Across biomorphic landscapes of sculptures and fabric and set to original music, Odyssea offers a feminist take on the concept of an odyssey: she makes her way by helping fellow travellers, building relationships and trading, rather than through the mythologically typical (male) approaches of strength, trickery or intrigue. This playful and poignant tale of encountering difference promises to make the familiar feel excitingly unfamiliar again.‘Odyssea is clever, vibrant, and poignant storytelling captured at its very best’ (LouReviews.blog)‘Fabric makes a landscape, a seascape, to host boats made from driftwood and other coastal pieces. It all appears so simple but it's obvious deep thought has gone into every choice. The whole is greater than the sum of its parts’ (WellingtonReviews.co.nz)Created, Choreographed and Performed by | Mariah SteeleVideography and Editing by | Hans RinderknechtOriginal Musical Score by | Yoshiko Arahata3-D Mixed Media Artwork by | Raphaela McCormackAdditional Performances by | Lia Nelson and Anna Remuswww.quicksilverdance.comfacebook.com/QuicksilverDanceCompany Watch Trailer

Pandora

What starts as an innocent search quickly escalates for 16-year-old Pandora, as the world of online porn unfolds before her. Conflicted yet drawn in by what she sees, Pandora begins to feel the impact on her real-world relationships. Drawing inspiration from the Greek myth of Pandora’s box, Pandora explores the dangers of defining oneself through the prism of the internet, and the importance of remaining plugged into the real world.‘Unlike almost any show I’ve seen… barefaced and unapologetic in its language and themes. Yet it’s also poetic, suggestive and nuanced, a clever variation on the Greek myth of Pandora and her monster-filled box’ Now Magazine

‘Berthiaume’s script is remarkable in raising many important issues in our attitude towards cyberspace through its open-ended nature and allegorical features’ TheTheatreReader.com‘The text is laced with metaphor, the staging highly stylized and the context surreal. Such a combination could have spelled disaster in less capable hands. But [the] world premiere of Pandora, a Youtheatre play about a teenage girl’s troubling encounter with online pornography, was an unmitigated success’ Montreal Gazette

Paul Robeson’s Love Song – an audio play

Clearing out their late mother’s belongings, two siblings in Kenosha discover a package containing a record, suggesting a possible hidden romantic link between their grandmother and African-American singer and activist Paul Robeson, dating back to 1949. Watching coverage of protests at the latest police shooting happening in their city, they recall her story of racist, anti-Semitic and anti-Communist protests at a Robeson concert outside Peekskill, NY. The tense and uncertain run-up to the November 2020 elections reveals the best and the worst of their country in violent conflict, in a repeat of that hot summer of 1949.This is an imagined story based around the Peekskill and Kenosha happenings.‘A political and cultural feast, delivered with panache, humour and plenty of sumptuous baritone’ ***** (Morning Star)‘The writing was authentic and the dialogue delivered incredibly well by the cast.

[An] emotional and powerful piece of theatre’ (Number9Reviews.blogspot.com)‘Thoroughly compelling and highly educational’ (Writebase.co.uk)Written by | Tayo AlukoCast in order of appearanceAdele Spears | Ananda Bena-WeberGeorge Simons | Bob WeickPaul Robeson | Tayo AlukoCharlie Daniels | Nils SwansonBenjamin Winger | Michael BiasJessica Winger | Lisa MerrillEssie Robeson | Leslie McCurdyPaul Robeson, Jr | Mark AtkinsonLloyd Brown | Darryl Van LeerHelen Rosen | Michelle PaulsSidney Danis | David RovicsPianist | Dennis NelsonDirected by | Olusola Oyeleyewww.tayoalukoandfriends.comwww.robesonslovesong.comwww.facebook.com/TayoAlukoandFriendswww.instagram.com/tayoalukoinliverpool/ Watch Trailer
